Heater Core Project. 'Gentlemen, we can rebuild her. We have the technology......' 200

The trusty 85 240's heater core or an associated hose decided to crap out after only 23 years. Leaking fluid that is soaking the driver side carpet and dripping from the frame. I started pulling appart the dashboard on what is the 240 owner's mother of all repairs.

While I'm in there shedding light to parts that have not seen the light of day since about August 1984, what else should I do?

I'm thinking of testing some questionable relays (rear wiper works but not on intermittent), maybe get the clock working again. Not a lot of dash squeeks now but I'm afraid that after I put it all back together, things will move. Any foam, adhesive, or material I should use between parts when I put this all back together?

Mormit, If you haven't thought of this already and if it isn't fairly new, I'd definately replace the heater blower motor with a new one. You should've had to remove this to get to the core. If you haven't heard already they're notorious for going out and it's 80% of the job that you're getting ready to do. Now is definately the time. Good Luck!

The blower moter is original so that would probably be best. At one time I remember reading somebody's post about being able to lubricate the blower to prevent a failure but at this point it makes more sense to put a new one in while I'm at it. I want to cover any preventive maintenance, repairs, or improvements I can do so I never have to do this again. I see fcpgroton has a good price on the blower so that might get changed out as well.

This is currently my spare car so I can take my time.

Did you have any warning signs prior to the big leak. Any faint smells of coolant at times or anything that gave you time to realize it was going or did it just go? I have an occasional faint smell of antifreeze but not all the time. Just wondering what to look for. Thanks, Good luck.

Hard to say because the poor girl has been sort of a loaner car lately. It is my spare car. My brother-in-law borrowed it for several months after his car was stolen......whish I had never bothered replacing the rear main seal on that Neon....another story, grrrrrr.

Then my wife's friend totaled her car in an accident and was using this car for about three weeks. The temp gauge was going up last week in traffic so she brought it by right away. Close to a gallon low on antifreeze. One week later the same. About three quarts low.

With it idling I could see coolant dripping from the frame alongside the transmission on the driver's side. The driver's side carpet and floormat appeared dry from above but pulling it up, the padding was soaked. Left the carpeting pulled back to help dry things out.

      Greetings:
This is just a thought. A long time ago, in a vehicle far away, I had a leaking heater core which I did NOT wish to replace, for the obvious labor hassle reasons. I used a LOT of BARS Leak stop leak. This can also clog the rest of the cooling system. After about 24 hours I completely changed the antifreeze solution to eliminate clogging, but the stop leak had cured the heater core. There is a risk that the radiator will get clogged, but it didn't. Even if it did, replacing my older radiator was far easier than the heater core. This was not a Volvo and obviously not the professional restoration method. Goal was to leave the stop leak in just long enough to stop the leak and then get rid of it ASAP before any bad effects occurred. I wouldn't guarantee it would last forever, nor that a rubber hose can be cured this way.

When I worked at the local volvo shop, I saw some cars that had just this problem, (leaking through the floorboard.) The problem was not the hose or the core, but the bulkhead fitting that had cracked and was leaking.

Hmmmm... That is a possibility. I pulled most of the dash out last night and haven't touched it today. The top of the core and hoses I can reach are dry so far. I have a new core on the way so while I'm in there the new core is going in along with new hoses and the bulkhead fittings if they are at all questionable.

          Thanks,
