Radiator tank bulged out! '87 745TIC 700

It is only bulged out on the thermostat (hot) side and has begun to seep at the tubes. Solder joint separated between steel frame and tank.

Of course it never showed an overheat and no major loss of coolant.

No excessive pressure or bubbles in the expansion tank. No real indications of a head gasket failure. No water in the oil either.

Seems to me that a HG failure would affect more than just the "hot" side tank?

Radiator / cooling system has been serviced every two years with a mild flush.

It does have about 343,000 miles on the radiator.

I'm thinking it's time for a new radiator? Either plugged or restricted?

Looking forward to your opinions, thanks!

Tom

i had an episode this past summer with my radiator going bad on me.i live in utahand the summers are pretty hot out here. my wife and iwe're heading home fromhelpinga friend with his property, and i was going 80-90 mph, next minute i know, the car's engne temp is off the charts and i'm still crusin, i pull off to the side of the road, and sure enough, i had a 1/4 " x 8" gasping hole through the side of the radiator. it did no other damage to the engine, i replaced the radiator the next day and the car actually ran cooler. i figured the radiator was finaly plugged up after 290,000 miles on the radiator. what i realy like about my volvo's. they run and go, are totally rebuildable, you can honestly say, it's the last car you will ever own and mean it.... what other car can you say can keep up or even surpass the volvo reliability??

Two Volvos + 21 years = paid for vacation home!

Plus they're hard working and fun to drive (especially with a turbo,M46 and IPD suspension upgrades!

    Howdy Tom,

With that mileage, yep, new radiator, new cap, new thermostat, new heater core, new hoses and back flush the block. There may be specific items on the B230 (like piping) that should be addressed too. Spend the time and money now to avoid major headaches later.

That is my opinion and worth every penny you paid for it. ;-)
