O2 sensor socket use w/ 4th gear switch * M46 trans

Reading about using an O2 sensor socket to remove and install a 4th gear switch on the M46. Am I reading about a large socket or the one seen on IPD's website? If I'm trying to work on top of the transmission I'm guessing using the smaller one would be better but I currently own a large cylinder type socket. Anyone got a first hand experience with this job?

    O2 sensor socket use w/ 4th gear switch * M46 trans

This is a bit late on this thread but what the heck? I have to replace my 4th gear switch and I have read about using a cut-down 22mm deep socket. I have an O2 sensor socket from Harbor Freight but the hex fitting does not go deep enough into the socket to work cut down. I saw this Offset Oxygen Sensor Wrench at Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-offset-oxygen-sensor-wrench-97177.html) and wonder if it might work to permit me to remove/replace the 4th gear switch without having to lower the tranny. Anyone know? It looks somewhat similar to the Volvo special tool 5250 shown on page 430-5 of my Bently book. If it does, it sure would be cheaper and easier than finding an acceptable socket and then trying to cut it down to size. Thanks!

If it is 7/8-22mm in size it will probably work. 4th gear switches are something that you almost never do, so I don't recall if it was 22 or 24mm. I used to have a deep socket that I ground to just the right length so that you could roll it onto the switch with a breaker bar attached to it and break the switch loose. You can try ordering up the O2 sensor wrench but if it were me I would buy a cheapie socket and cut/grind it to the desired length and be done with it.
