1992 245 Fuel Pump Issues Problems Fuses, etc! 200

Hi Guys,

I'm about to get this thing I hope. Looks like everything with the mass airflow and O2 sensor are fixed. Now I keep blowing fuse #4, fuel pump. The relay is new and works perfectly. I did a test by putting a 16A fuse in instead of the 8A in #4... started the car and it blew fuse #6, the other fuel pump fuse.

Are there two separate fuel pump relays? I took the cover off the new one and there's two separate relays in the one housing. When the key is engaged the lower relay turns on for a few seconds then turns off, I hear the pump (guess it's priming it). When the car is started both relays turn on. While the car is running, if I open the top relay, the car dies instantly. If I open the bottom relay, the car misses then dies after about 10 seconds.

What's going on here? Thanks for all your great help.

Jim

I agree with Bubba, and would start by unplugging the wires to the O2 sensor heater (also fed by fuse #4).
Look for a flat, 2-wire plug on the passenger side of the fire wall, with wires feeding into a sheath that also carries the O2 sensor signal wire, and goes down and under the car.

The 2 wire colors are Black and Yellow-Red.

    EDIT:
Of the two relays under the white cover, only 1 (Fuel) is for the pumps and O2 sensor heater. The other one is the "Main" FI System relay. It should be energized whenever the Key is on, and powers the ECU, AMM, Injectors, Idle Air Valve, AND the Fuel relay (all with voltage from fuse #6).

The ECU then controls the Fuel relay by its ground side — briefly when the key is turned on (as you saw), but more importantly when it gets timing pulses from the Ignition CU. (No Spark = No Fuel)

      Thanks for the info.

My new O2 was the $29 Bosch "Ford" replacement that I spliced in. The blow fuse was from my fault, it was cold and I was in a hurry. Splice gone awry! The check engine light is off now, no error codes... but the engine still isn't right, there's rough idle, terrible sputtering, popping, on acceleration, once I'm up to speed it runs normally. Seems like a vacuum leak but I checked every hose. I do regular maintenance and the car has always been fine. There's 186K and ran great up to the original mass airflow went last week. Ideas? Thanks!

Here is what the 92 manual says about the fuses:

    #4 Fuel feed (in-tank) pump, Lambda-sond heating element 8 A
#6 Main fuel pump relay, Lambda-sond, Fuel injection system 16 A

So one of these items is drawing too much current becuse the item is defective or an exposed wire (bad insolation) is touching something it shouldn't. Inspect your wires and maybe try disconnecting the O2 sensor and in-tank pump one at time to isolate the problem.
