VIN plate doesn't match the car! 120-130

I was looking at this post over at turbobricks:

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?p=1554607#post1554607

and he posted his production plate, and it doesn't add up. He was showing off his "new" 122(which looked like a great find). I was going to email the guy and tell him to verify the chassis number on the production plate to what is stamped onto his body, but I thought I would get the information confirmed first.

I looked up the info on the volvo world site:

http://vlvworld.com/indexframe.html?production.html

Under the "Type" : 12246VG

It would break down as 12, 2, 4, 6, V, and , G

"12" - would be for a 4-door (the car is a 2-door, it should start with "13")
"2" - would be for a dual carb
"4" - would be for US Export
"6" - would be for a BW35 auto tranny body
"V" - would be for a left hand drive body
"G" - would be for a 1964 production year

Under the Chassis number "Ch. Nr.": 157683

For a 4-door, it would fit the 1964 production year, and for a 2-door, it would fit the 1966 production year.

Under the Upholstery Codes "Kladsel Upholst": 157-258

All 4-door models start with a "1" and all 2-door models start with a "4"

Looks like somebody switched production plates from a 4-door?

Paul

I agree with you that the car and VIN plate don't match. I would be willing to bet, no one checked the numbers hammered into the body. Looking at the rear sup. I would tell him to look at the vertical surface under the hood below the windshield but it may be hammered in between the battery and the heater core....

To the best of my knowledge they only started stamping the body in mid-1966.
I have two 1966 220s (122 wagons) and number 36025 does not have the VIN
stamped in the firewall but 44489 (of 45999) DOES have it stamped there as did
my 1967 132 (2-door 122).

From what I understand, the stamped VIN number is the legal identification of the car. I had to get my '65 122 VIN vertified when I applied for a title, and they had to scrape the paint off to confirm the production plate had the correct number.

Both my '66 (4-door) and my '65 (2-door) had the VIN stamped into it.

Guys;

It would make sense that the stamped numbers are the legal ID on the vehicle...a removable plate is about as good as a VIN written in crayon...

Cheers
