Head Gasket Failure Pic

This is a pic of the head gasket on my 89 760 turbo. The failure is between cylinders 1 & 2. I originally thought my timing was out of whack, and then a friend suggested a compression test. I have all the parts, now I just need to figure out how to replace the seals in the top end. I have read all the articles in the FAQ’s but I am still nervous. Hopefully when I’m done I will have succeeded and create a step by step photo document of the job

It looks like there is a break between 2 & 3 but that is just the lighting

I ended up getting a rebuilt head from this place in Alabama cylinder heads inc. 1 800 597 9813. It was only $265 delivered no core return needed. My local machine shops wanted $262 for a full reconditioning not including any parts if needed. It didn’t need a full reconditioning, but the head was warped where the break in the gasket occurred. I probably could have got away with just resurfacing it, but if I’m going to do all this work I would opt for the full hot tank, pressure test and a valve job. FCP Groton for the most part has excellent prices, is charging some were around $550 + a hefty core charge. The quality of the new head was great I highly recommend ordering from them if in need.

That's pretty amazing - I mean, the pistons and cylinder walls look like they are in fine shape, and I am guessing (based on your model year) that the car has over 200,000 miles.

get that head looked at by a machine shop of you will be doing the job again!...i have a dollar that says it is warped and will need to be tuned up a bit to seal properly.

It had no power in drive you could kinda hear it wasn't firing but you need to have a trained ear to know what your looking for I can’t really describe it. Oil in your coolant is also a tell tale sign but it wasn’t the case with my car. It all depends where the break in the gasket is. If the is no oil in your coolant and you have good compression your head gasket is probably ok.
