Rear end grinding in Reverse 700 1991

I have a 1991 740 Turbo wagon that just two days ago started making a grinding noise when I put the transmission into reverse and give it some gas. The noise is coming from the rear of the car. Also, I only hear the noise when I press the gas and only when I am reversing on flat ground or up hill. If I reverse down hill I get no noise. The rear end has alway made a little "clunking" noise when I shift it into gear (R or Drive). Also, the transmission seems to be shifting fine and there is no noise when driving forwards. However, I do notice a slight wobble feeling coming from the rear at very low speeds. Can anyone help diagnose my problem?

Thanks.

Check your universal joint soon! It may be about to come apart.

How do I check it? Is it safe to drive it forwards?

Grope the shaft and see if it clicks.

It can tear through the floor if the joint fails. You'll get the shaft, in other words.
