Besides the thermostat which you have already replaced, check the harmonic balancer.

I bought a nice 1992 745T last year with a blown headgasket. I repaired the engine, and found the cause of the overheating. The harmonic balancer was slipping badly, and the water pump was not being driven enough to keep the engine cool.
