The rear-end of John's old 1800E 1800

Mighty familiar to me, since I carefully cut it apart and gave it to the seller for free for his father-son car restoration project. I'll only briefly reiterate that the guy convinced me to give him a bunch of extra 1800 stuff for free and then turned around and started hocking it on eBay.

This is the rear end of JohnMC's old 1971 1800E.

Trying to forget the whole incident, but it's hard when the stuff keeps appearing in my eBay parts searches.

He contacted me when I offered up my 1800 project "free to a good home" on the Yahoo 1800 list.

He was the only person close enough to come get it in the time frame I was working within but thanks to your warning I told him no way. Good thing too, if I'd have seen it on ebay I'd have been in jail right now probably. He was nice enough about it when I told him no but his ethics are completely non existent and I will never buy parts from him.

Thankfully no one came to get it in time so I bought a 4 post lift and stuck it in the garage above the Duett for later restoration.

Yeah, he's quite the 1800 packrat. I'm glad you did not surrender your car to him. John's 1800 was almost gone, but trashing your 1800 would have been tragic.
I've made a habit of warning local people with an 1800 for sale about what Mr. Khan will do with their car.

Myself, I'm presently dealing with the thought of buying a local 1800E in much better shape than John's, but for the main purpose of eventually robbing it's parts for my 68 130. I feel very hesitant to do that, since an 1800 deserves to exist as much as any 122... Plus I don't want another garage full of 1800 that I'd have to sell or find a proper home for.

I have a small city lot here in St. Louis. No room to stash extra cars...

Yes, I recognize the combination of yellow primer covered by thinning gray primer.

That was a new piece of sheetmetal. As were the rear quarters. Poor car got the tail smashed in while I was sitting at a stop light. The insurance company totalled it, and I should have let it go to a junkyard way back when. But no, I kept the car, and took it to a body shop, and spent goot money to have them pull the frame, and put on new quarters, tail section, and a j/y trunk.

And when I went to look at the results, I realized what a waste of money it had been. It just didn't look right. The rear fender lips were uneven. The bumper mounts were off center behind the sheetmetal openings. The tail lights were slanted. The only original remaining sheetmetal (sides of trunk openings) were layered thick with bondo, and one side was even lacking the lip at the top where the chrome trim sat. Viewed from afar, it just looked 'off'.

Then and only then did I realize that most modern body shops simply didn't have the skill to work on something like an 1800, and that the value of an 1800 wasn't enough to justify taking it to one of the few shops that could fix it right. So I didn't bother painting it. Which was slightly serendipitous, because after a few years casual use the delayed effects of the salt they use here in MO in the winter struck with a vengance. And seemingly overnight the sills and front fenders (inner and outer) all perforated.

All said, about a 10 year transition from near perfect 75,000 mile garage queen from CT when I bought it in 1988 ($5500) to rusted, beat up parts car. I kept it around for a while, thinking I'd use the drive train in something interesting (like a Duett). But it just depressed me to see the sad thing sitting there slowly rusting away in the driveway.

I remember that 1/4" thick bondo.. pretty scary looking.

I could tell that those body pieces were new, but getting them apart... that was a costly act. I paid for that with about 8 sawzall blades, but I saved the tail and both fenders. I was thinking they could be used to restore that ill-fated 1973 1800ES that Mr. Khan did actually buy.

I should reiterate, that I'm not upset that he bought and stripped the 73ES, I was and (still am) pissed that he lied to me and kept asking for *every* piece I had saved from the 1971 with the intention to sell it from the start. I fell for his line about loving volvos and wanting to restore anotehr car with his son. Since so many volvo owners have been kind to me, I gave him quite a bit, including a couple bits I've had to buy from other sources. He fooled me so that I was actually going to send him some stuff that I found after the car(s) left here. Then I saw the parts on eBay.

He mostly got the rear bodywork, some structural pieces, and interior parts including all the gauges, exterior lenses, exterior trim, as well as the entire AC system plus of a lot small, moderately hard to find stuff. When I confronted him, he made a big deal about *not* selling the rear bodywork. heh.
Do not be surprised if some familiar rear fenders show up tomorrow.

When I disassembled that car, I saved almost everything. In my opinion, no vintage volvo deserves any less.

Some rotten pieces of the chassis went to the recyclers as well as the roof and front fenders, The engine was cleaned, all gaskets were replaced, oil pump ring was installed, IPD valve cover was installed and it moved into my 1967 220, along with the gearbox, rear axle, brake system, coil, front hubs, and seat operators.

I also kept all of the D-jet system along with the computer wiring harness.

Basically, if it could fit on a 122, I saved it. The alley-recyclers were happy for the small pieces of scrap steel I gave away.

From that car I still have a the trunk lid, rear seat, rear glass, carpets, and entire front crossmember. I'd be happy to *give* any of these parts to you guys if you are in need.

You might also be happy to hear that someone from the 88.1 KDHX (local community radio) got the window operators and a couple pieces of the doors - they are now in a nice 1960s model 1800S here in St. Louis.

I'm also going to send the heater valve off to Aric D. in exchange for some 2-bolt air-filters he sent me.

Recycle and share.

Does it bother anyone that the descriptions of the items he sells NEVER refer to the condition of the item. I didn't say it worked so you can't say I lied about the condition!!!!!!! This bothers me......
