92 240 with non ABS front calipers? 200 1992

After reading other posts here I thought that all 92 and 93 240s came with ABS as standard equipment. I know my car is equipped with ABS because it has ABS module behind the battery and sensors on each wheel; plus an annoying ABS light.

What puzzles me is that my front calipers only have one valve each. I though the front ABS calipers had three valves; so I wonder if previous owners/mechanics replaced the OEMs and slapped some non-ABS ones instead.

I suspect the ABS light comes on because of a sticking cylinder on one or maybe both front calipers. I plan to replace them soon anyway; but not exactly sure what calipers to buy.

I am calling to the advice of all the experts here to help me troubleshoot the ABS light and get the right calipers.

Jorge

It sounds like you have the correct calipers, but count the brake lines to convince yourself ... 200 1992

re: "...my front calipers only have one valve each. I though the front ABS calipers had three valves...."

What you should easily see is that earlier, non-ABS front calipers each had two brake lines (the fronts were activated by two independent, triangular circuits). The ABS front calipers have only one brake line -- there is no longer any redundant brake lines with ABS.

Your calipers should only have one bleeder. My bet is that your ABS light is related to one of the sensors being dirty or damaged, unless the caliper is really seized up.

    Good luck!

      Herb,

Thanks for your response. It clarify things. I did a system flush with the Motive power bleeder two weeks ago hoping the sticking caliper problem and the ABS light would go away but it didn't.

Sometimes when I press the brake pedal I can hear a noise like metal pounding metal and at the same time my pedal goes down a little that makes me think that the sticking piston gets pushed out hard.

I've seen these symptoms since a year and a half when I bough this car, but just recently the ABS light started coming on in the mornings or after the car has been parked a few hours. I notice that if I hit the brakes hard a few feet after taking off the ABS light stays off, sometimes I hear the piston being pushed, but not all the times. Some other times the ABS light comes on despite of hitting the brakes hard; I learned that turning the engine off and then on at a stop light a few miles later, the light doesn't comeback.

My conclusion after all of that is that definitively have a bad caliper(s) and that is the reason of the ABS light as well. Any more thoughts?

Bleeding the brakes isn’t necessarily the cure for a sticking piston in a brake caliper. I’ve had pretty good luck with just working the pistons in and out a bunch of times. Best way I’ve come up with to do that is remove the retaining hardware (pins and clips) and install a set of nearly or completely worn out brake pads in the caliper (the thin pads allow maximum movement of the pistons). Then pump the pedal to extend the pistons out, noting which one(s) extend slowest, as that will be the sticking one. Push the pistons back in (I use really big ChannelLock pliers), repeat. This is the quick and dirty way to hopefully get it free; obviously the right way is to replace the caliper…

Also note that pushing the pistons all the way back into the caliper will push fluid back up into the master cylinder resevoir. If it is already full, there's potential to overflow it.

        Good luck
