Where to buy a rear differential seal?? 200 1993

According to FCP Groton, they don't have a pumpkin seal for my '93 245 that has ABS.

They mention that their seemingly universal gasket for the 200 and 700 cars is not appropriate for cars with ABS.

What gives, and where can I get the right seal? I want to change out the rear end lube.

Thanks!

I assume you are talking about the gasket for the back cover not the pinion seal. Do not replace the pinion seal unless it is an emergency. They are very hard to do. If you are just wanting to replace the differential fluid get a syringe and suck the old fluid out. Much easier to do it this way and you will not destroy gaskets that can be difficult to replace. IPD sells a syringe for the job or most auto supply retailers would probably have it as well.

I've got a mityvac I can use, but I usually like to let everything run out, so I flush out any shavings I can.

But I can go the suction route I guess.

      Guy W,

The syringe idea works very well, but if it is a "1031" rear dif with posi, the syringe will not remove the friction material shavings which can eventually pack up in the pinion bearing. I would recommend trying to find the tag on the cover that says which rear end the car actually has before proceeding.

If I'm off base, please post back, its been a while since I dug into a rear dif....

I can't tell what model I have. I was expecting to find one of three numbers on the rear axle tag: 1030, 1031, or 1041.

However, as you can see, none of those numbers appear. How do I decypher it?

The bottom right corner of the tag is normally where it would say 1030, 1031, or 1041.

        My car has nothing there?!

Your car may have a "1031" rear end in it if I recall correctly, so the rear cover gasket would be different than "normal". If you want the correct gasket, the dealer can get it for you, just make sure you have the VIN number for them. If all else fails, Might I recommend a Wheaties box and an exacto knife so you can cut out a new one of very similar material to the original one for a heck of a lot less?
