shifter question 1800

Hey , I have a question , where the shifter sits into the housing ( ball socket with pivot pins )on top of the transmission , are both notches supposed to be the same size as the pins because the right side in my opinion is worn at an angle . I`m just wondering if the extension housing top is just like the short top where both notches are the same size as the pivot pins ? If so has anyone ever built this up with aluminum rod and a torch (Alumiweld rods) ? I always have a problem explaining things , hope this makes sense . Thanks for any comments . Larry

    shifter question 1800

Yes, when new, both notches were the same size, and the pins just fit with little play. What you have is very common with age and wear.

I have fixed my long shifters (same type of set-up) by sliding a drift pin over the shifter pins, trimming them to size, and then elongating the notches on the top cover to accept the extra thickness of the drift pins. I've done this on an M4 and M40 with good results.

I posted this poor quality photo of the repair years ago. I think you can see what I did though.

      shifter question 1800

I did something exceedingly similar to the shifter top on my PV. Cleaned up the worn slots with a dremel, made little 'bushings' for the pins on the sifter that fit the wider slots, and put it back together. And wow, the gears are now where they are supposed to be!

Thanks for the input , good idea . I will pass this on to my friend . I think he might try to weld it because it is worn pretty bad . Thanks Larry
