850 wheels on a 240 safely? 200

I saw this in 245waggin's post and it got me thinking...

I have a set of front drive Volvo wheels with new 205/55/16 tires on them. They're my summer tires for the 850.

However, I'm probably selling the 850 shortly, and it'll be going down the road with the tires/wheels that are on it.

The wheels are off of an S60 I think. I bought them at the local tire shop because they were cheap take-offs on a new car.

My first question is can they fit right?

My 2nd question is how safe is it to run the spacers if I need them?

I plan on having the 25/22mm IPD sway bar kit on in a month or so and though I don't drive very aggressively, I'd like the car to be safe if I happen to be pushing things to the limit.

So I'm looking for any insight. Thanks!

You need about 25 - 30mm. Opinions vary, but I think that at that thickness, you are better off going with adapters, not spacers and long studs. Make sure the adapters are both hubcentric and wheelcentric - i.e. the center bores interact properly with the car hub and the wheel to keep things centered properly.

As for the safety aspect? Properly made adapters (that's a big caveat, BTW) should be as strong as a wheel is in the first place. There's no more stress on an adapter than there is on the hub of an alloy wheel bolted to a hub.

I'd look for a good alloy, and press in studs. Wouldn't want anything with threaded studs in aluminum.

I run 25mm adapters in front, 32 adapters in back and now can put any of the much more common FWD offset wheels on my 240. I currently have some 17X7 Sport Edition D3's, which were taken off a Jaguar S-Type (I bought them nearly new on eBay).

Here you can see the 32mm adapters in back:

Looks sharp John. Where did you acquire the adapters from?

...and Luke, I just quickly relayed the info I got from Chris at IPD, but obviously it works and these folks here on the BB who've done it certainly can give the best info. Also, you could call Chris and get his opinion too...

I got them on eBay from someone selling them and some really ugly (IMO) 18 inch chrome wheels they had on their 740 wagon.

They are nicely made but the issue with them is that the wheel-centric ring (the lip that pokes out from the outer face to lock into the hole in the center of the wheel) is made to the slightly larger, more standardized diameter, and not the smaller Volvo hub size. So with these I can't use OEM FWD Volvo wheels, just most aftermarket wheels in 5X108 FWD offset.

I understand not being able to use the OEM Volvo wheels (without having them bored out) but is it safe to use wheels with a larger center hole?

Won't the beveled nature of the lugnuts center wheels perfectly even if they're not resting on the lip of a raised center piece?

You can buy centering rings that slip into the aftermarket style wheels to allow them to center on Volvo-sized centering rings.

And yes, I think that's generally the case. But I think you do need to tighten them very carefully if you don't have a hubcentric adapter. Wiggle the wheel around as you snug the first nut. Wiggle it as you snug the second, making sure they seat at the very bottom of the conical seats.

I'm not sure if the hubcentric system does anything other than center the wheels, it's possible it might also have something to do with how the weight of the car is supported? I.e. through the hub interface, and not through the shear forces on the lugs?

IPD has begun offering spacers that would work, at a price comparable to everyone else's.

Luke. Got cha thinking eh? Those will look nice.

I spoke with Chris from IPD and he said they will definitely work. Bolt pattern is the same 5x108, but your 240 is a 20mm spacing, the 850 is 40 (or 43 he may have said).

He said a 15 or a 20mm spacer will work. If you get a well-machined spacer from Eibach (think thats the name) you run no safety issue.

The one's I was working on had 195/60/15's

    Now I'm really envious! ;)

The tires that came on my 240 were some low grade Kuhmos.

Just a heads up for those of you in the snow belt: Tirerack has Blizzaks on closeout for 35 bucks a tire in 195/75/14. A superb deal on some awesome snow/ice tires. I've just purchased a set to put on the stock steel wheels.

I'll check with IPD tomorrow about the spacers to make sure the offset is the same on those S60 wheels. It might be even greater than 43mm. The tires rub at full turn lock on my 850.

Definitely. IPD seems to sell them for about 150 dollars/pair.

Is there anywhere else to get them online for a cheaper price?

Otherwise, it's not really worth it to use the wheels I have since they're not fancy and wouldn't serve much benefit to the way I drive.

            The other direction 200

I have a 245 that I use only in the winter, and use roads where I need a bit more ground clearance. My old 145 had 15" wheels, narrow tires (they cut through to snow better) and good ground clearance. Will the 145s fit on the 245, on the off-chance that I can find a set? Or is there something else that will fit? I really do not like adapters; I've seen too many failures because of them.
