EGR Code 241 200 1991

Our '91 245 is giving me EGR fault code 241 and the check engine light. Clearing it will often solve the problem for weeks, but sometimes not. Car passed smog with flying colors a few months ago, but does occasionally idle high for a few second on cold start. I've run the on board ECU output diagnostic. On EGR cars, should the routine also activate the vacuum solenoid for the EGR valve? There are a bunch of references to this being bad more often than the valve itself.

Thanks bricksters,

DS

David,

You may have solve your problem by now but if not my tangentially similiar experience may be of some help. I had a similiar problem on a 95 940 EGR Volvo. The check engine light would come on and the ECU code pointed to the EGR/Temp Sender. The problem turned out to be a dirty connection at the temp. sender unit (not an easy thing to access, under intake manifold port #3). The test for the vacuum solenoid test was a different set of button pressings on the same unit in the engine compartment. You will have to check the Bently manual for the proper sequence.
