Deisel conversion? 140-160

Does anyone know anything about replacing a B20 w/ a deisel engine?

Here's a thread on Turbobricks where someone swapped an OHC Redblock for a VW TDi/Toyota trans. Not quite the same as a 140, but certainly in the same ballpark.

    Turbobricks thread.

Looks like the best candidate is a 1.9 turbo diesel VW, using a Toyota transmission. I haven't pursued it much yet as I haven't found a turbodiesel at a price I can tolerate, yet. I won't buy a junker, just to ge it done. I want one for many, many, miles on the road!

It looks like several configurations of turbo, one of which mounting higher on the engine that the others. My guess that is the one to use.

Here is a link to start with:

I think it is a GREAT concept!! If you develop anything further, holler!

Yes, those 1.9 VW TDI's are in very high demand, hence the high prices for a used motor. Those cars and engines have a fanatic cult-like following, especially here in California where they had to stop selling them for a few years, due to emissions requirements.

Additionally, the VW TDI's can be easily converted to run on biodiesel, which is super cool!

Here in New Zealand there were a number of 140 that were coverted to Nissan 2.8litre 6 cylinder diesels with matching manual transmissions -- seemed a fairly simple swap. I think they are all gone now along with most other 140's sadly.
There must be lots of better modern swaps around now with 4 cylinder diesels that would fit better.

That conversion was real popular in the UK, kits are available there. Unfortunatly those engines never made it to the US.

That engine DID make it here but only in small quantities---a turbo version was an option on the very last (79-80) IH Scouts. Good luck finding one. Also, as it is roughly the same size as the L28 in a 280Z, I don't see it fitting easily into a 140, though it would probably go right into a 164 like it was made for it.
