Tranny cooler 700 1987

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of getting a $40 transmission cooler for my 740GLE. I live in a mountainous area of NC, and lug my engine a lot when driving on slow, bumpy, uphill dirt roads. My driveway (1/2 mile) has a 500 foot stretch where you have to drive UP a 40 degree incline at 3 to 5 mph.

I think this would be a wise investment. Thoughts? My only question is if it would take too long to heat up the fluid in the morning, and what effect winter driving would have (would I need to disconnect it?).

Thanks!

Ari

Tranny cooler - Autozone models OK? 700 1987

Ok folks, thanks for the suggestions.

There are several tranny coolers at Autozone that say they will fit my particular configuration. Should I get a 'light-,' 'medium-,' or 'heavy-duty' application cooler? I figure that the benefit would be more due to increased fluid volume than air cooling, because I use my 740 as an in-town daily driver.

It's that driveway. I do it once or twice a day. Cool thing is, that the view from up on the ridge, out the bay doors, is better than the Blue Ridge Parkway. I live next to a few thousand acres of protected forest.

I wouldn't think a tranny cooler would be alot of help if you're only doing 3-5 mph unless you put a fan on it. The extra volume of coolant would help some though. You can always cover it in the winter. I hope you don't get much snow. I can't believe a two wheel drive car, even a Volvo, could get up a 40 deg road with snow on it!

      Thanks for the advice.

It's funny - the Volvo certainly has more trouble with bad-traction situations, but it's manageable. Usually snow shuts down most things around here, so it's not an issue.

Actually, a FWD car of any type does just fine on that incline. The 'hill,' as we call it, gets rutted by rain and traffic, and you have to take care not to catch the underpan of the car on a bump or in a hole.

      Scary!

All Auto transmissions love to run Cold.

It's never a bad idea to add additional cooling. So long as you do it Clean and correct so you don't break or blow a hose.

    Lugging...bad for the engine...downshift.

I know lugging is bad. But I'm in first ("1" on my selector) already, and if I apply more than 1/3 throttle the tires will spin.

That said, I usually try to go up as fast as I can, to avoid lugging (and potentially messing up my engine and transmission).
