The possibility of cup holders... 200

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to install single din cup holders from another car into the lower mounted tape deck/ cubby location? Cup holders like these:

I did something vaguely similar on my 240 awhiel back. 1990-1993? (I think) Honda Accords had a spring-loaded slide-out cupholder with a little tray thing at the bottom. The one I used came from a 92. It's kind of hard to describe, but anyway, I took the cupholder assembly and separated it from the tray. There were 3 (I think) mounting bosses which I ground off, and installed it in the top of the little box thing in the 240. I believe that it would have slid right in on an older 240, but the 91-up 240s had that amp behind the box and as such it's dimensions are slightly different. I had to do a little modification of the box but eventually got it to fit, and secured the cup holder assembly to the top of the box with some JB Weld. It's not perfect, but I still have some of the box left to hold CDs, cigarettes, whatever. The fit in the bevelled front of the console is perfect though, and it looks about stock to my eyes.

It holds most sane-sized cups from fast-food places, as well as 12 oz cans. There are some limitations, for example it's kind of in the way of my shifter when I put the car in park, but slipping the cup in after the car's in Park works fine. Also, the cup blocks the ashtray, but again I deal with it. The weirdly-shaped shifter console on the 93 sometimes keeps the cups from sitting perfectly flat. All in all, though, I think it's ok for the $3 it cost me at the PNP.

I can try to get a picture up here tomorrow sometime if anyone cares.

Drew

Pictures would be very helpful. I was thinking about grabbing some ford taurus/mercury mistake/saab ones like the set in the picture I posted. I found that on an acura board, they seem to fit anywhere a cd player could go. I used to just stick my drink in the small cubby in the e-brake housing, but since I installed an armrest it's pretty much out of commission.

FYI, the right kind of travel mug wedges perfecly between the e-brake handle and the driver's seat. :-)

I do care, can you post or email me pictures. I would love to change my 'K-Mart' door/glove box hanging cupholders for something a little better looking.

Thanks,

OK, let's see if this works.
I don't really know if HTML works on here or not, so I'll just post direct links for copy/pasting.
The first one shows the cupholder in/retracted. What I like about it is that you still have some storage space below the cup holder, I don't think that would happen with the DIN ones, though they might be easier to install. The top of mine doesn't look the greatest, I let it slip while the JB Weld was still drying but
I'm sure most brickboarders could do better. I feel like it looks better in person but whatever. It's still very secure in the dash.

Here's a pic with the cupholder out, shifter in 2 or D, I don't remember but it doesn't really matter. It fits a 12 oz can excellently.

And the last one is the shifter in Park, with the same can still in it. The shifter being in Park doesn't require movement of the can, only fast-food cups get in the way a little, and even then it's not that bad.

Nothing like Barq's and a Newport to start out the day! Thanks brickboarders for giving me an excuse to do that!

As I am currently doing dash work to move heated seat switches up there (because I can't find an e-brake cover to replace the shattered one that is fitted for switches) and installing a new CD player, I would love to try this while I'm at it. If anyone has found one that works for the 244/245 dash let me know.
