Something ought to be done about these "rats with hooves" As others have mentioned below, they damage our cars, eat our flowers and crops, and spread disease via the ticks they carry. I live in Northern Virginia, about two hours west of DC, far enough out that there is no shortage of hunters (at least there is plenty of gunfire to be heard during deer season) but they aren't getting the job done. Deer as numerous as ever---I can't count the number of near misses I've had, and at least 8 collisions with them over the years. I've even had them run right into the SIDE of my car once or twice. Your damage sounds about par for the course. Over the years I've hit (actually, in most cases they've hit me) deer with a 145 (twice) 245, 745, Mercedes 240D (twice) and a Fiat 124 sedan. Thankfully, none of them came through the windshield. All of the vehicles were repairable, and required approximately the same list of parts as yours does.
I have often heard things like "there are more deer now than there were when there was nobody here but Indians" and that, according to the forest service, or some such authority, there are 5-10 times as many deer per square mile as the land can support. It seems to me that since the state goes to such lengths to protect them, (short hunting season, bag limits, strict poaching laws etc.) they should be responsible financially for the damage they cause. If you hit one, not only should you own the dead animal (which, in VA you do) but you should also be able to send the repair bill for your vehicle to the state, and they should have to pay it. Likewise, farmers should also be compensated for their depradations, or at least be allowed to shoot them at any time, as they are with other vermin.
