Go ahead and change the fluid, maybe the filter as well---it's relatively cheap and easy to do and it might fix it. Whether it does or not, get rid of the car as soon as you can find another RWD red block (240/740/940, turbos are OK if you don't mind the gas mileage, but avoid the 16V engine)
