Are 240 struts always green? 200

Took the shot strut cartridges out of the '86 245 I'm parting out and was surprised to see that they're olive drab. I don't remember mine being green. I also don't remember mine being "Made in Japan." Are/were these anything special, or are they all green? Also, if they were made in Japan, just who made the OEM strut cartridges for Volvo?

The front springs were 13.8mm and the front sway 19.5mm. Just for reference. I initially thought the springs were thicker than most because they had so much old undercoating baked on. Hate that crap.

My 88 745 had Boge strut inserts. I am almost certain they were the originals. They were dark blue. I am going to do the struts on my 89 244 soon. I will let you know what kind and color they were when I get to it. The KYB GR2s that are going in are silver.

Thanks Bryan - I really like to know the stock specs of our cars, it helps when cruising the junk yards, but no one ever seems to know or care what came stock.

I've even come across misinformation, such as the famous "all 240's except turbos and GTs came with a 19mm front bar." Well, I found that to be complete crap when I discovered that my '93 and many '92s came with a 21mm front bar. A little observation, measuring, and recording could save people a lot of trouble.

The strut inserts I took out of my '90 245 about three years ago looked to be OEM and were the same drab green you mention. Dunno much beyond that, but just to add another datapoint.

    Cheers,

my 86 244 had green struts as well. Not sure if made in japan or not. But figure in the 80's that would have been good.

Hmm. Strange. Why would Volvo, who painted almost everything black, paint the one thing you'll never see green?

Also, everybody says that Boge was the OEM supplier for Volvo strut/shocks, but I don't think Boge would have come from Japan in the mid-80's, would they?

Anyway, guess I can toss them. Thanks guys!

          Sean,

When I pulled the struts out of the 92 245 with ABS, they were black, I didn't look for a country of origin, but I do recall that the stamped date codes were week 50 of 1991, ie. original. Yes, Boge was stamped on those now worn out limp rags as well.

See, that's what I remembered on my '93, John: black Boge's, probably stamped Germany or something similar. I thought I would have remembered olive drab struts from Japan. They have "Volvo" stamped on them. I can't find anything on the part number either (can't remember right now) nor the "VC05" stamped on the tube. I guess I was wondering if it was an upgrade option, a stiffer strut from the dealer, maybe.

              Sean,

The only "dealer upgrades" I recall from that era while using the term "upgrade" loosely, was pin striping and a $2K posi rear end option! Of course, that is above and beyond the $200 crotch guard interior coating and the $350 paint protection package!

That being said, if the struts on your PC are from Japan with a mfg date that lines up with the birth date of the car, they are probably factory KYB, and that ain't a bad thing! KYB gets a bad "rap" based on their low price, but after you run a car with their adjustable AGX solutions in competition, you will understand their commitment to accurate design and reliability. Heck, I even lobbied them to create the AGX series for the 240, but I didn't have six figures in cash to pay for the NRE!

ps. I did tell them that Bilstein missed the mark with the HD product!
