HELP!! OD broken wire? 120-130

is it possible to reinstall the wire from my OD solenoid? it somehow got caught on something and got yanked out. there doesn't appear to be even a little chunk sticking out to reattach to, but if anyone has soldered it back or what ever, can you let me know? the last time my solenoid went bad it cost me $200 bucks to replace, man i'd hate to spend $200 for a broken wire!!

    HELP!! OD broken wire? 120-130

i fixed it! i can't freaking believe it! i just tore the rubber cover off of it and lo and behold there was enough wire sticking out to get a butt-end connector on it and wala! i'm back in business. now i just gotta quit using this old girl as a truck out in the boonies; it might have 456 gears but it doesn't sit high enough to clear some of the brush i've been beating her through.
man i need to find a different set of rear springs!
    thanx to everyone who responded.

    HELP!! OD broken wire? 120-130

I was just looking at the solenoid connection on my D type O/D and concluded that if the wire broke off I would consider (carefully, with sober second thought) crimping a small ring terminal onto the wire end and screwing this to the metal ring on the solenoid with a small sheet metal screw.

    Cheers,

    HELP!! OD broken wire? 120-130

    Hello,

If you don't get a definitive answer from here, email David here:
    http://www.odspares.com/
He is unbelievably helpful, generous, and knowledgeable. He will give you a correct answer immediately.
Btw, I have no affiliation, I am just a very satisfied customer. He diagnosed the reason for my non working o/d over the 'phone, and supplied me with the necessary parts for free. Unbelievable really, so the least I can do is a recommendation.
    best, Dave

I've has some luck in rebuilding such things, but never that specifically.

What OD do you have? I have a spare J-type solenoid, but have never tested it.

hey jack, if you still have that solenoid, my solenoid is on the left side of my tranny which from what i've read makes it a J-type? though maybe someone put the wrong solenoid in it?

Sounds like a D-type to me. No experience with them, so, no idea how to fix them, but the image on the CVI parts catalog looks like that solenoid has one wire coming out of it. The J-type has two wires with connectors.

Sil is probably correct that you have a D-type. The J type's solenoid is found on the driver's side of the OD and has two spade connectors.

In my experience, the J-type has a large stock output flange that requires a special part to mate up to a standard 1.75" driveshaft. I had to order a special flange from Don Thibault and I had to modify a differential flange to fit the replacement rear when I put a J-type OD and an 1800E rear in my 67 wagon.

I'd look at it like this. The solenoid is wasted anyway and if you can fix it, you've saved yourself some cash and picked up a good skill. If you can't repair it, you are not out anything more except some time and effort.

If the wires from that solenoid exit through some sort of potting material, try removing that stuff (knife or dremel tool) and find the wires. Look for some bent housing bits that you can release to open up the casing. Once you are inside, hopefully you can find the broken wire and re-attach it.

If you succeed, I'd strongly suggest adding some sort of break-away connector on the wire to avoid this happening again.

If you have no luck or can't see how to fix it, contact BB member ODGuru. He's well-respected for his knowledge of the M41. Actually it would not hurt to contact him anyway.

If you try for a repair, take some photos for us.
