*DoH!* Stripped transmission fluid return line fitting on radiator 200 1986

I was doing the transmission fluid flush on my 86 240 DL sedan as per the 700/900 FAQ. The fluid return line came off very smoothly and the flush went well. Then I noticed that the nipple on the radiator was stripped and the line was not going back on no matter what. The fitting on the end of the line was completely bright red with rust (car lived in Buffalo and Philly for years) and either I twisted too hard or it just was an old fitting. Any easy way to repair this or do I simply need a new radiator? (THis would not be the end of the world, as a very slow leak in the radiator seems to have developed anyways).

You could jam a piece of rubber hose over the fitting, and then over the tube, and secure them with clamps, or you can take the radiator to a repair shop and have a new fitting sweated in.

Thanks for the suggestion. I used some tubing and a bunch of cable ties and its working perfectly.

No offense intended, but PLEASE replace those cable ties with hose clamps! After all, that tranny fluid gets hot and the plastic ties will FAIL on you. Sorry for the intermittent shouting but experience demanded it.

Haha, no offense taken. I was almost embarrassed to tell the truth about my extreme temporary fix because I figured it would expose my laziness (full time job, full time student, car not needed for transport to either). It's the same mentality that makes you lie to the doctor, I guess. Luckily this is not face to face so it's easier. Thanks for calling me on it. That's what great about the board.

Zip ties have their place, if they are used for an "emergency get me home" kinda thing, my hat is off to you MacGiver (SP?)! Just don't count on it lasting! Once you reach the point of using "pantyhose" for a water pump and alternator belt to get home, you'll know what I mean! Fortunately my future wife (at the time was with me), ergo, pantyhose source! That was 27 years ago, this June is our 25th wedding anniversary. Does anyone know if the 25th anniversary is bailing wire, duct tape, zip ties, chrome plated 240 steering rack, silver, or diamonds??????

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

              Hi Jorrell,
Everyone knows that the 25Th wedding anniversary calls for chrome plated acorn nuts for your license plates. Best wishes on your anniversary and give her a big hug.

Officially, It's supposed to be silver, but a set of chrome door edge guards should be acceptable. ;)

                Stickbuilder,

Thanks for setting me straight! Chromed plastic door edge protectors it is! JUST KIDDING! My wife will be well taken care of, after all, I'm sure that pair of pantyhose was expensive... even 27 years ago!
