Freon R134a in a 1993 240 air conditioner? 200 2003

Did the late-vintage 240s (1990-1993) use R134a coolant or R12? Was there a transition year where the air conditioners changed from R12 to R134a? Thank you!

R12 and R134 is a freon or a refrigerant, but not a coolant, just to be technical.

Freon R134a in a 1993 240 air conditioner? 200 2003

'93 was the first (and last, actually) year that the 240 got R-134a. All previous used R-12.

Freon R134a in a 1993 240 air conditioner? 200 1992

How can one tell if the R12 system has been converted to R134A?

I bought my '92 245 used with no maintenance records so I'm not sure. What do I look for?

A/C systems remain a great mystery to me.

Thanks to all!

'92 according to Haynes is r134 .... 200 1992

...according to eht Haynes Techbook for Automotive AC, Volvo switched to r134 for '92 model year...

BUT, you can tell by checking the fittings on the back of the compressor and looking at the service port near your accumulator.

If your car was "converted" you'll prolly have r134 fittings on the back of the compressor. If original r134, the lo-side service port [near accumulator, pass. side nxt to firewall] should have an r134 tag on it, but if that's gone the shape of the port will be the clue...

R12 fittings are threaded, r134 fittings snap on [like an air compressor fitting]
and are much larger...you will be looking at the male fitting...

Get thew Haynes Auto AC Techbook...it's worth the $10... AC won;t be such a mystery to you anymore ...
