Many years ago, a guy who worked for Volvo (as a factory service rep) at that time told me that there were about 2500 71 142Es imported to the US, of which approximately 2000 were overdrive, 400-some (late year production) were straight 4 speed, (I've never seen one of these) and only 12 were automatics, most of which suffered minor water damage on the ship, and were sold at a discount. He bought one of them for his wife. It is one of two that I have seen. I live in the DC area. There was also someone on this site a year or two ago who had one, and was asking about converting it to a manual transmission. I think that car was originally sold in NYC.

I was also told that there were differences in the BW 35 in these cars, compared to the regular ones, that it was from the police version of the 164, and had a higher performance valve body and different shift points.

Most 71 Es were either blue-gray metallic or gold, with more of the former. There were also a few red ones (I had one, with OD, many years ago, only ever seen one other) and, supposedly, white as well. (never seen one of those) All of them had a black leather interior, similar to that of a 164.
