any advice for apparently decreasing mpg and/or knocking, struggling @ low rpms 200

This sounds a lot like a vacuum leak between the AMM and the throttle body which is causing the engine to run lean. Check for cracks in the accordion hose between the AMM and the throttle body. Also check for disconnected vacuum lines on the intake manifold and throttle body.

Given the work that was done, those areas could very well be the cause.
