Still seeking information on AW transmission swap ref: RPM sensor opening 700

I hate to "blanket post" all three series, but posting to ALL misses everyone not set to ALL...

The AW71 in the 87 744T parts car does not have an opening for the RPM sensor. Nor is there a “knockout” or anything similar to follow with a grinder or saw. It is a good transmission and I need one for the 90 244.

Some time ago I removed a bell housing from a junk AW70 transmission. I removed all the bolts and had to coax it off with a hammer. It also seemed as though that when the bolts were removed it allowed some of the internal components to become loose. It seemed like it would have been impossible to replace the bell housing without opening up the transmission.

So the questions are:

1. Has anyone here done a layout on a bell housing and cut out for the RPM sensor assembly? If so how did that go?

2. Has anyone here done a bellhousing swap on an AW transmission and what was involved?

Thanks
Randy

Hello, I have done the swap many times. It requires very little work to change the bell housings. Just remove the bolts that secure the bell housing. Use a good all purpose lube and spray around the front pump of the tranny. Use a rubber mallet to coax the lubricant in between the seal and then use mallet to remove the bell housing gently upwards off the front pump housing. When replacing the bell housing make sure the bottom surface is nice and clean. Apply a small amount of silicone gasket maker, I like the grey, along the bottom sealing area. Gently coax the 240 bell housing down and torque the bolts to around 45 ft pounds.

Thanks for the torque specs. I will be replacing the 2 O-rings.

Yes I have cut the notch into a bellhousing, kind of messy and noisy. The next time I swapped the bellhousing, definitely my preferred method. No trans parts fall out,but do replace the large o-ring.

but do replace the large o-ring

I believe I have left out that O-ring in my order. I ordered (FCP Groton) what they refer to as the "pump O-ring". It is a bit thicker and smaller around than the "housing to transmission" one; the one you refer to as the "large O-ring".

I did not realize there were two until I removed the bellhousing this afternoon and I had missed it on their transmission parts page.

They should probably both be replaced?

Randy

Thanks, I have decided to swap bellhousings as well.

I have the Oring coming with the rest of the seals.
