Hey there Mountainman-
Same car I've got. Can be a lot of fun, but as you've found out, there's only so much the stock engine can do for you.
One of the things to keep in mind is the stock fuel injection, LH 3.1 in this somewhat rare model, will put up with small modifications but large jumps in performance will not be possible. The K cam is probably as far as you want to go with it (similar to a VX cam or IPD cam.)
The cam is probably the best performance mod you can make to the engine. There are improvements, all incremental, that can be done as well, either along with a cam upgrade or stand alone.
One big one is to switch to an electric fan. A reliable thermo switch needs to be then added to control it. That big fan consumes 2-3 hp, probably more at high revs.
Along those lines, get rid of the AC, if it isn't working anyway. IPD and others sell mount plates to allow driving the PS pump without running the AC pulley.
The manifold can be improved for better flow. The non turbo engines don't really push the capacity of it too hard but it can be better. The engine ports and manifold ports can be ground out: gasket-matched to equal the volume of the manifold gaskets. This may give 1 or 2 hp.
A big improvement can probably be realized with an aftermarket low-restriction cat, and an exhaust system from a 240T behind it: bigger pipe, and no front muffler. A high-flow rear muffler is another help to the system. There are some tradeoffs with noise of course but it won't sound like a Honda fart-can.
As for the cam, it's good that you're getting the adjustable gear. I'd start with 3 degrees advanced and see how you like it. Less than that might move the rev range up too high to be much good for everyday use. It's a matter of preference. These engines make good torque- they're not fantastic revvers.
Another thing you can try if you're really into changing the way it revs, accelerates and drives, is to change the rear end gears. Automatics get a 3.73:1 rear end, 5-spds get a 3:31. The auto rear end in a 5-spd car gives better acceleration, at the expense of higher revs on the highway. But they rev low on the highway in my opinion, so not a terrible thing.
With mine, I've concentrated more on handling though I installed an old Canadian "B" cam (not a lot of difference but a little more high end). I've got Bilstein struts, Boge rear shocks, cut two coils in front, 215/55-16 Michelins on Hydras, and urethane bushings. Just got a GT rear bar, haven't put that on it yet. Group A wing, GT braces, ceramic brakes. It's fun, could be faster but I like it.
For fast, I have just picked up a former completed project from my friend's garage... an 89 244GL with the heart of a 93 940T tucked in it. VERY fun....
