There are ways to determine if in fact coolant is causing the cold start misfire. Find out if your mechanic knows how to do that, and is CONVINCED that the gasket has failed. Other symptoms, like loss of coolant, and cooling system overpressure would also be present, and you'd have noticed that.
Then tell him his price is ridiculous. Five to six hours, tops for the re and re of the head. $150.00 in parts, some coolant, oil change, and $50.00 for a head re-surface, IF it needs it.
At least that's what I used to charge. And it's 50-50 that the head has a crack, and not a blown gasket. But if you have not overheated the engine it is probably the gasket.
As the AMM, at that fuel mileage the driveability would be just about gone. The cat would be red hot. What symptoms does it display driving?
