ignition coil 120-130

Hi all, does anyone have any thoughts on the use of a performance coil as opposed to the standard unit. The engine is mildly tweeked and whilst i have no issues , i have been wondering if a performance coil would improve power. Look forward to your reply's. David

One MSD-5 ignition unit plus a Blue Bosch coil is ok for our Amazons (on my car, MSD-5 near to battery, Bosch coil set on the original coil location.

The voltage measured at the plug gap is a function of the resistance of the ignition wires, the plugs themselves, and the cylinder pressure at that moment. If the coil you have can produce a spark across the gap under all conditions now, it is fine. Just because a large coil is rated as "able to produce 40kV" doesn't mean it will - it only produces what is needed to establish the spark.
MSD is fine to a point - if you have breaker points it is compromised. The best ignition is the 1975 B20F electronic system. Accurate, powerful under cranking conditions, and reliable. I'd have that system over MSD any day. I've measured MSD on oscilloscopes, and by 3k rpm the "multiple sparks" have become one. Lots at idle, one at max rpm. I'd far sooner have the timing accuracy of the Bosch electronic system.

David,
An MSD type ignition system would certainly give the car a good kick in the butt. As for swapping out the Bosch coil for a "performance" coil, traditionally the stickers that come with the "performance" coil will make the car faster.

On a more serious note: we did find Nology wires helped on the Porsche 911 capacitive discharge ignition systems as for coils the easiest way to see if what you are getting is worth the money is to check the weight of coil. The heavier it is the better it is (typically).

Andrew
