Where is it (long post) 200 1985

Hopefully you have either a Haynes or Bentley (preferred) manual. If you look on the driver's side right behind the distributor, you will find a cylindrical contraption with an electrical plug on the front end, and 2 rubber hoses attached at the rear. The bracket for this valve is bolted to the block where the mechanical fuel pump would be on a carbureted engine. Don't unbolt the bracket, but there is a pinch bolt on the strap holding the valve to the bracket. Remove the bolt (the horizontal one) and slip the valve out from the rear. You may have to loosen outer bolt that locates the strap to the bracket to facillitate this. Once you have the valve out of the car, use throttle body cleaner to clean the valve. Hold the valve vertical with the electrical plugh pointing up, and spray the valve. Use a small soft brush to assist in cleaning the valve. Plug one of the hose ports with your thumb, and spray the cleaner into the open hose port. Close that port with a finger, and agitate the valve to clean it. Once you have the valve clean, try rotating the valve with something like a Q-tip. Do not use a screwdriver since you will probably scratch the valve. If the valve moves freely, it may be okay. If it seems to be stuck, it most likely is shot. FCP carries them, and you (they tell me) can find them at the Pick N Pulls. It is not fun to remove and replace this valve. The inner hose will invariably knock the wires off the temp sensor, and the knock sensor. Hint....The knock sensor is the lower of the 2 sensors, and is attached to the block, while the temp sensor is in the head. The knock sensor wire is the brown one. The temp sensor wire is the light green one.

Start it up, and if the engine is idling so slow that it quits, then you are in good shape. Ground the blue white wire at the test port, and set your base idle to 700. Remove the ground jumper, and you should be good to go. If not, you are no worse off than you were before the cleaning. You can drive it until the replacement arrives.

If you have a digital Volt Ohm meter, if you remove the electrical connector, you will find either 2 or 3 connectors. If you test between the connectors on the valve for a 2 wire unit, you should read 20 ohms of resistance. If you have the 3 wire valve, the resistance between the two outer connectors should be 40 ohms, and the center to each outer connector should read 20 ohms. If you find a reading that does not match these values, it is time to hang a new one in position. Best of Luck.
