1970 142S: Issues with upgrading from M-40 4-speed to M-41 + Overdrive 140-160

It's very obvious if you saw the two side by side.

The M41 crossmember is pinched (for lack of a better word) near the center so it will fit in the gap between the gearbox and overdrive unit.

A M40 crossmember can be modified to fit by cutting out part of the center, but as you would suspect, that will compromise it's structural integrity. That said, I have had a modified (by me) M40 crossmember on two different 140 models for tens of thousands of daily driving miles with no apparent problems. At the time I did the conversion, I could not find a M41 crossmember anywhere so I used what I had rather than what I would have preferred.
