How to Install Front Trim? 200

I just spent more than a frustrating hour futilely trying to snap the front chrome/rubber trim piece back into its clips. I had to give up before I did some damage. I think the front bumper will have to come off in order to seat that trim into the clips. Am I being obtuse and missing something obvious? Is there a trick to it or does the bumper have to come off in order to get that trim cinched down properly?
