I'm amazed that the dealership told you the car could be driven without a cluster. The cluster completes the charging circuit. Without it the electric fuel pump and EFI are capable of draining the battery very quickly. Gone are the days when we could drive our points-and-condenser, carburetor inducted cars for a day on just the battery. As to the alternator dying, I once read that without the charging system complete, the alternator will be unregulated and can thus overheat. However the 88 is internally regulated so that's hard to imagine. I think the alternator dying is a coincidence. The first breakdown--definitely not.
