B20 turbo 120-130

Looking at diffrent kinds of turbo setups for the b20 motor and I was looking at the suck type where the carb is before the turbo. Which is bolted to the intake of the turbo. This setup doesnt need a carb box to equalize turbo pressure. Has anyone ever done thise setup using a 40 dcoe carb?

It's far easier to do a draw-through system than blow through. Most aircraft piston engines used the former. One advantage is that the fuel as it atomizes produces a cooling effect similar but not equal to an intercooler. Pressurizing a carb, and having sealed pass-throughs for the linkage, is a hassle.
I used to work on an early 240Z Datsun using a single 2 inch SU carb on a draw-through system. Short plumbing, instant throttle response, killer power.

Imagine an exploding ball of fire coming from under your hood!
I think that's why you don't see suck through turbo systems much.

Sure wouldn't want to use an intercooler, I cringe thinking about that much pressurized air/fuel mixture sitting just the other side of the intake valves, waiting for a slight backfire of some sort.

If you are going to the effort of turbo-ing a B20, go ahead and turbo a D-jet B20, and replace the D-jet ECu with something modern and programmable. Like Megasquirt. Might even cost less that a DCOE. And much more precise and flexible and easier to set up and tune. Plugging a laptop in vs. ordering expensive little metal bits and swapping and praying.

Dale from Avalance Performace had one for sale a while back that he was trying to sell cheap that would be a good start to what you are trying to do. I can send you an email with a pic of it if you post your email address. It had an SU and needed some finishing. You could shoot him an email via his website and see if he still has it.

What you are trying to do can work just fine, but you would need to be careful. Old Volvo's have high compression and cast pistons. With this type of setup fuel distribution would not be very precise and you would need to run real rich when you are into boost to keep from detonating and wrecking your motor. Also some timing retard such as an MSD BTM would be helpful. If you are careful and keep the boost modest you would have a fun car, and the way you are trying to go is probably the simpest way to get it done.

I've got a turbo project going in my 122 also. I'm finally getting started on it again after doing other things for the past 9 months. You can check it out in the link below if you are interested.

Also on ebay is an EFI setup based on the extrudabody throttle bodys.

That might be a solution for you if you decided to go with electronics instead of a carb.

        Good luck with your project.

        Sean
