Surging RPM,flooding 0problem 200 1986

My 1986 240 quit today on the road. The car started sputtering and quit running. It started again but the idle went up to 3 thousand RPM and i turned off car..it would not run after this. This happened back in the summer and i changed air filter and fuel filter and everything was fine until now.The car was hard to start with indication of being flooded as not all cylinders were firing and the RPM was surging up and down.Any ideas on what causes this????I am fortunate to have a 90 240 wagon as a back up.
Many thanks on suggestions
Don

It may be as simple as a cap, rotor and plugs if your current ones are older. What is the condition of the plug wires?
If the above is good then clean and test the idle air control valve.

What have you tried so far. AMM or maybe fuel pressure regulator first? Not sure of your skill level.
