instrument cluster problems on a 740 700 1987

You have an itermittant bad ground to the dash that is 'healing' itself when warm.

When the lights are off... the dash is seeking a ground circuit through the panel bulbs that are off the cluster and are properly grounded. When you turn the lights on, that circuit goes from nearly zero volts (ground) to battery voltage, making all your gauges inoperative. Start with the integrity of small connector below the speedo itself. That's where the cluster gets its ground.
