This sounds like a stuck/sticking kick down cable. The next time the car "sticks" in a low gear, pull over in a safe place, turn off the engine and open the hood. On the driver side of the engine, you will find a silver colored wheel near the throttle body that has two cables attached to it, both coming from the direction of the firewall. Is one of those two cables all loose and not contacting the wheel? If this is the case, the transmission kick-down cable is stuck and must be replaced (repair is not an option). Now for the "bad news", to replace it, you will have to jack up the car, drain the transmission, and remove the transmission pan to unhook the other end of the cable. This involves removing the starter bolts (after you unhook the battery), or unbolt the trans dipstick tube from the pan (risky as it will probably leak thereafter... I've been lucky so far). Getting at the top starter bolt is a real pain. I use the "drop the trans cross member method" where others use countless ratchet extensions and swivel joints.
