I've always smeared a liberal amount of high temp silicone sealer to the joints where pipes slip into one another. Use Volvo type clamps--they are much kinder to the pipes than the u-bolt type. If you need to loosen the joint to reposition the pipes the silicone will make it easy--even months later.
