Spin-flange cat with fixed-flange header pipe? 200

Any comments? Will it fail?

I find myself with a spin-flange cat and a choice between a 16-year old, very cracked, spin-flange header pipe, and a 3 year-old, good-as-new, fixed-flange header pipe. My father is welding up the spin-flange pipe as I type, but...I'd rather use the one that didn't need any welding.

Thanks in advance.
Sean

    Downpipe-to-cat bolts 200

What size bolts should I get to attach the two flanges? I had to use what was laying around yesterday, but they do not fit well. I plan to get new ones, since I will clearly have to take this mother apart again, because it is leaking at the downpipe-to-cat connection.

Also, note: The car seems a good deal more sluggish now that I have a full exhaust on. I do not think it is in my head, either, I think the less restrictive exhaust (missing rear muffler) allowed it to spin up faster. Maybe one day I'll have the money to take it to a shop and have a custom 2.5" system put on.

    Answer: 200

It works piss-poor. Damn exhaust. Stupid crap.

My header pipe had a 4" crack in it, probably contributing to my surging on start-up and rich running conditions. So I used the one I took off my parts car.

The aftermarket cat I bought from FCP is trash, I give it 8 months before I fail emissions and have to buy a new one. Plus, their website lied about me needing to buy a donut gasket. $4 extra, and the cat came with a better donut gasket than the one I bought. Oh, and my '93 header pipe had a buldge at the end which meant that no donut gasket would have been needed anyway. Oh, and what the website failed to mention was that I would need to buy bolts, because the cat did not come with them.

My exhaust is so shoddily rigged right now that I'll probably never get it sealed up tight, and I expect to have to do more exhaust work in a few months.

On the plus side, I bought the Volvo over-axle, cat-back kit, and everything fit together beautifully. Looked like good stuff. Assuming I don't have to air-chisel the garbage cat off soon, I think it will last a good long time. And now the cops can't stop me about my lack of muffler or tailpipe and I can drive easy.

    I hate exhaust work.

Answer: there is a simpler answer if you proceed outside the box thinking 200

all the cats i have seen have a 3-4 inch flange forward of the cat. many end in a flared lip. the header pipe has a customized end as well.

all this fancy metal work on each of the mating pipes make for awkward fitting and sealing.

the dirt simple country boy cheap and durable fix to all this is to reciprocate saw off the fancy ends off each of the pipes leaving a plain vanilla pipe end on each with a gap of an inch or more between.

obtain a filler pipe sleeve which will slide over both ends of the pipes and then exhaust clamp each end fo the sleeve.

job done.... quick fast and clean. any future work simply requires a saw cut through the sleeve and dremel slitting the the remains. you will get a perfect seal easily using this method without the aggro of tweaking yourself for the right donnut or the right header or cat or whatever.

Not a bad idea, Ted. I'm going to see if my horrible mess of a hack-job holds up, but if I find myself taking it apart in the near future, I may try this.

Actually, I'll probaby take a grinder to the SOB and make it really fit. I should have done it in the first place, I'm a fair hand at precision metal work.

    Spin-flange cat with fixed-flange header pipe? 200

Thrice I had the misfortune of using a spin flange cat with fixed flange header pipe.Every time the flared end of cat which holds the spin flange broke within a period of 5-6 months. Advance auto respects its warranty :)but I got tired. Every time I used triangular gasket. I think this combination is doomed to fail however I read a mail here where donut gasket was used and it lasted but I will not experiment.
