'85 240 turns over, won't start 200 1985

Hi there,

And welcome.

You introduce yourself with a challenge, certainly, as you describe a car with a dead battery, but one that runs. Then the car morphs into one with a charged battery, but ceases to run.

It is already obvious to you somewhere between the running and not-running something changed, and any troubleshooter should first suspect his own actions. But in the case where the harness is rotted, an action as innocent as tugging on a wire could change things drastically.

I know you will be hesitant to begin the harness replacement without a known-working motor to start on, because of the many pitfalls yet unknown to you. So the standard approach to a no-start is required, once you double check your last work.

Verify cam is turning. Look through the oil filler hole, or if you're careful, remove the distributor cap and be sure the clips are clear of the turning parts.

Then check for spark, plug wire to strut tower bolt.

Then check the 25A fuse wiring. You want shiny, solid connections from the battery on.

Then jumper 4 to 6 left side fuse terminals, listen for pumps and crank.

If all above OK, try to start it with the AMM disconnected.
