long trip 200

hey guys its been a while since ive been here

but im trying to decide if i should drive my 1987 245 with a broken odometer and broken fuel guage the 700 mile trip to alabama and back.
the car has been reliable to me so far
its got a five speed with lots and lots of miles on the clutch.
it doesnt really slip but occasionally i get a squeak out of her in hard acceleration.
other than that ive maintained it pretty well
it could have up to 300k miles on it but probably closer to 250
im a pretty good mechanic and have tools.
ive got new break pads fluid all around

so what should i look out for before the trip any good things to check. or spare parts to bring
im already thinking fuel pump.

Have a great trip, but if it was me and one of my 240s? Let's see... driving through the mountains of VA, NC and TN? I'd take my AAA card and a book to read while I wait.

Fuel senders are a dime a dozen at pick&pull yards. You could even take yours out and clean it, gently, and test the resistance. I did that with my 850 when it wouldn't go below 1/2 tank. After cleaning with alcohol it worked again.

Figure a stop every 4 hours for coffee and gas, you should be in good shape.

hello andy,
how about buying a bung nut o-ring at your local volvo store, and finding a junkyard along the way to pull a used fuel sender.

take your vom with you so you can measure the resistance of the sender. 30 (full)-240 (empty) ohms.

mine went bad after about 18 years. not bad (the sender life).

regards,

Hi Andy,

First thing that hit me was maybe you could borrow someone's GPS. No odometer, no fuel gauge, when you gonna know to buy fuel?

Duct tape is like 'The Force'. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

It would be overkill probably, but he could stop every 2 hours and top off.

Ha ha , do not keep any food in the car and keep lots of fluids, that way you ensure that you are going at regular intervals.
Good luck
