Persistent - Power steering pulley misalignment 200 1991

Hi guys,
Bad day at the office yesterday.

History: 1991 240, 189k, I had replaced accessory belts b/c of screeching a while ago. Very little improvement. I noticed that the P/S pulley was misaligned, and following BB advice I replaced all the bushings on A/C and P/S pump yesterday. Hence the bad day: 4 hours for the 7 bushings, had to grind nuts, etc. Add half an hour of washing afterward so I would be allowed in the house again.
And then: no improvement! Maybe a little bit (who am I kidding). But the pulley still looks off.

Given that extensive swearing rarely fixes the problem: what do I do now? My plan is to 'adjust' alignment with some washers at the mounting points and maybe take a closer look at the holes in the hinge-arms of the P/S pump.

Any better ideas or advice?
Thanks,
Boerre

I know that on older 240s (1985 and older is all I've owned) the P/S pump mount is a soft alloy, like aluminum or something like that. It could have easily gotten bent if abused.

I've had exactly the same issues with misaligned pulleys. I don't think there is anything else to do than what you are suggesting, as far as new bushings, check you bolts for wear, maybe some shim stock and washers, and, if you've got the ability, making new arms that the PS pump mounts to. I don't like the way my PS pump looks in the engine bay, but it has gone 397,000 mi., so...

Thanks for the advice! I think it is the arms I will have to focus on. I don't think I can make my own, and didn't see them for sale anywhere. I have also noticed that the front 'arm' is missing the middle bolt which attaches it to the pump. May be part of the problem.
Hmm, now that you mention it, I noticed one of the A/C compressor bolts was a bit worn... But that pulley seems true with the crankshaft one. Will try things one by one. If anyone knows where to buy those arms - that would be great.
        Cheers,

          Hi,

The engine castings are dealer only.

Persistent - Power steering pulley misalignment -Poly bushings? 200 1991

            Hi guys: progress report.

One of the bolts on the front alloy arm on the PS pump was missing, and the other was a bit worn. I put new ones in place, and tried some magic with washers. That definitely improved the situation, but at the beginning of a trip the screeching is still there.

Essentially, the pulley looks fine without any tension on, but as soon as I start tightening the belt (and I don't tighten it too much) the pump shifts. The belt pulls the 'top' and 'block' - ends of the pulley towards the front of the car. It kind of makes sense, too, since it has "3" points where it is attached. I wish it had 4, like the AC.

But this is not the place for wishing, so I am thinking I will try polyurethane bushings just for the PS pump. Maybe they will keep it better in line. Maybe not. Any thoughts or other kind of encouragement appreciated.

            Cheers,
            Boerre

See if you can post a picture of the mounts it sounds like something is missing on yours? I don't have any issues with mine. Poly bushings may help.

Persistent - Power steering pulley misalignment - wrong belt... 200 1991

                Hi again,
Soooo, I put in the poly bushings for the P/S-pump and it's pretty darn straight. But the noise was still there after installation. That started me thinking - thinking can be useful, I should have tried it some month ago.

Long story short, I was looking at the wrong belt (or not the only one that was slipping)! Today, I marked the 2 alt belts, and sure enough, after a short drive and some noise, they were off! Some tightening improved the situation, but I will replace those bushings next week, and then things should be good.

The '3rd' bushing, connected to the tightening mechanism, seems hard to get to - any advice on getting that out?

Many thanks for the input, very excited that I finally localized the real problem!

                Cheers,
                Boerre
