Electrical Feed/ Fuse to the 745T Cooling Fan Relay 700

Hello Folks,

1992 745T wagon. I am relatively new to this car; I know my way around my older 1990 240 a little better. The 1992 745T is essentially a 940 in 740 clothing, is what I am told. Here's the problem:

My cooling fan does not come on. The fan will run fine on high speed and low speed with 12V applied directly to the connector at the relay.

However, the electrical supply to the cooling fan relay shows no voltage at any time. This electrical feed is clearly not supplied through the main fuse panel.

My green book Volvo shop manual shows a cryptic little icon for a between the battery and the relay. Also, Dave Stevens contributed the following in the 700/900 FAQ about 2-speed electric cooling fans:

"You won't find any fuses at the dash, it's only fuse protected at the battery junction box."

Where this is located? If no fuse, how can this feed go "dead"? It used to work just fine.

Thanks for any insight into this.

Fusible Link off battery positive terminal 700 1992

That "crypic little icon" implies an "OR" junction where the FL may connect to 1 or more loads. My son just found the fan one "blown" on his '92 940. The PO left the ring terminal on, with frayed strands and wrapped some of the remaining "link strands" around the 6mm bolt/stud — but it finally finally gave out. A new ring terminal on the remains of the link (maybe 8" of 10") restored fan operation.

Google fusible link for more info. It's basically an undersized wire with fat, gray insulation about 10" long, which changes to a red wire at the cryptic junction leading to the fan relay.

Thanks for that response. My 92 740 should be very similar, if not exactly the same under the hood as your son's 940.

Is the fusible link and connection right at the battery? Much of this wiring harness is tucked away.

Fusible Link off battery positive terminal (EDIT) 700 1992

Yes, it's right at the + terminal — a "ring" terminal on the 6mm stud (10mm nut) that tightens the big cable's clamp terminal.

EDIT: You'll have to slit the plastic cable sheath to get at the wires & link inside. Just tape it up afterward.
