Thinking about a tranny cooler, question about lines 200

Hey,

I'm thinking about putting in a transmission cooler. I'd cut the line leading from the transmission to the radiator and route the fluid to loop through the cooler. I want to cool the tranny but also bring down the overall temp of the car, so I want to splice into the line that leads away from the tranny so the extra cooling of the tranny fluid takes place before it hits the car's radiator. Which line do I tap, the top or bottom one? Put another way, which of the metal lines is 'send' from the tranny, and which 'return'?

thanks

Thaddeus

Thinking about a tranny cooler, where to mount it? 200

Where do people usually mount these things? Out in front of the A/C condensor? Seems... tight.

According to the mounting instructions on my B&M, it can be put in front of, or between, or behind the other two radiators. Getting it out front gives it the most cooling efficiency, but it's not strictly necessary if it's a big enough unit to still pull away enough heat with, say, 70 or 80 percent efficiency. The size and shape will determine what your options are. You could move your horns and get lots of room way in front. I've seen that done. I don't have AC, so I had lots of room on the pass. side front.

I considered putting mine downstream from the tranny, but ended up going with downstream of the radiator, (cooled before it goes back in the tranny). I had a concern about over-cooling the trans. fluid in cool weather, but went with the manufacturer's recommendations. My unit has a by-pass feature, based on viscosity, to prevent overcooling. I'm still not certain which is best, or if it makes all that much difference. I seldom see really cold weather anyway.

And you meant what I'd call "break in" to the lines attaching to the radiator, right, not literally cut the lines?

I got a unit with nipples, so I was stuck with using hose to route the oil through the cooler and back. I really wish I'd got one with threads, and left myself more options. Even with hose, I could have used more options. It was hard to find matching fittings. Long story.

Good Luck,
Steve

Volvo's instructions are to install downstream of the radiator .... 200

re: "...I considered putting mine downstream from the tranny, but ended up going with downstream of the radiator, (cooled before it goes back in the tranny). I had a concern about over-cooling the trans. fluid in cool weather...."

Volvo engineers agree with your end-result.

I have a Volvo auxiliary ATF cooler in all three of my 240s. The screw-on fittings (no clamps) and hoses are included, including the diverter, in the kit.

But to the point: the installation instructions leave no doubt that this cooler takes the fluid *after* it has left the radiator, and from the cooler the fluid returns directly to the transmission.

So I guess that's where Volvo wants it installed.

Hi Thaddeus,

The ATF flows up in the radiator, so the bottom connection is the send side. Info retained as part of the flush routine...

The top line out of the radiator is headed back to the transmission so it would be the bottom line that is carrying the fluid from the transmission.
