86 740 in-tank pump LH 700

Hello, a friend of mine has a 86 740, he says the car won't run right if the tank is less than half full. I figured it was the hose that connects the pump to the metal line ... like on my 240.

But looking a the pictures it appears the assembly uses a different setup on the 740's, like a long one piece hose. Can anyone offer some advice on this? Thanks!

Tell him to turn car on, remove gas cap and listen. You should hear 2 things, 1)the splash of the gas returning to the tank and 2)the distinct buzz/humm of the intank pump. If no 2) then pump is dead.

OK - If I hear the pump then could the pump be sucking air due to a split hose? This common with 240's, I know nothing about the 740 setup. Thanks!

Possible or the little filtering "sock" which fits on the end could be totally plugged. Though I think the reason the 240's had the problem was the hose was a much smaller "accordian" style which was prone to splitting. The 700/900's have a foot long piece of regular fuel hose(not accordian'd). My bet is its dead. Does the fuel pump under the drivers side make significant noise? When the primer pump is working in the tank you can hardly hear the main. The primer pump failing puts undue stress on the main and will hasten its demise.

the intank pump has probly failed and just needs to be replaced.
