Positraction rear end - How can I learn if my "New-2-me' S90 has that? S90-V90 1998

Bought a rather nice 1998 S90 in July for a newer wifemobile. (Replaces the 1997 965 with "iffy" air condtioning.)

It came with a lot of documentation but nothing I found spoke of that type of rear axle. Maybe I missed something in the Owner's Manual?

With the car up on a rack it there a tag or other marker I could see? Perhaps a code on one of the information tags?

Thanks for reading this and for whatever help you send.

Regards,

Bob

I have a '97 s90. The new car sticker says, under "OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT":

    COLD-WEATHER PKG W/LOCK DIFF 645.00
    LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL
    COLD-WEATHER PACKAGE

I don't know how to interpret that without an actual brochure. Does that indicate there is a cold-weather package "w/o lock diff"? But the single price covers everything. There is no further information on the contents of a "cold-weather package".

I think the best way would be to spin the rear wheels off the ground.

Or maybe a dealer could look it up in their DB given the VIN number.

I was under the impression that if it had the winter package (heated seats & rear window defogger) then it would have the rear-locker. It's a mechanical locker that works up to something like 25 mph. Our 98 S90 has it.

That being said, our 95, 960 does not have heated seats but does have the locker. I spin both rear tires in the winter and leave gouge marks on both sides of the driveway from the studded tires.

      Many thanks--

Our S90 has no winter package except for the 'W' choice on the tranny. Also missing are the seat heaters and the outdoor temp readout. So, I will assume no locker differential and stay away from wide deep muddy places.

The 1997 965, initially delivered (maybe ordered new w/option choices made)in Nashville, TN. Winter package seems all there: seat heaters, dash temp reading, cargo door window heater. If there is a heater for outside rearview mirrors they haven't gotten my attention yet. Wonder, do they run while the rear window 'de-mist' is running, from the same switch. So I will assume that the diffy IS a lock-up.

      Thanks again,

      Bob

You are correct, the heated side mirrors are on with the rear defogger using the same switch.

and for the record driving in the snow without the positraction SUCKS. My car was bought in SC, so no heated seats, no temp, and no locker.. Now I live in the mountains of NC... at the bottom of a hill. All it takes is one inch of snow and the car is not going anywhere. The W only helps on the flat ground.

On the upside, as long as you have the rear window defroster, you have the sideview defroster. So at least I can see behind me when I'm not going anywhere.

    Checking Posi S90-V90 1998

    Hi Bob,

You could always chain 'er to a tree and see.

Seriously, when I had it up on the rear axle, the opposite wheel didn't turn the opposite direction, when one was rotated with transmission in gear, like it does with an simple differential. Turned the same way.
