Making 93-95 instrument clusters work in 91-92 7/9 series (re:fuel gauge) procedure/images 700

Many thanks to Karl Nitz (knitz) for supplying images and an explanation of how he reworked a 1993 cluster to replace a nonworking 1991 740 speedometer. He tried replacing the capacitors on the 1991 speedometer per the instructions in the Brickboard FAQ’s, but it did not result in a working speedometer.

I had reported earlier (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1371221/740/760/780/additional_information_140mph_speedometers_199195.html) that the 93-95 clusters seemed to work in the 91-92 cars but then realized the fuel gauge did not work. Karl found a way to rework the circuit board on the 93-95 cluster to accept the fuel gauge from the 91-92 cluster.

There is a capacitor in the area of the fuel gauge on the circuit board of the 91-92 cluster. It must be removed and then installed on the 93-95 circuit board.

The capacitor from the 91-92 board is soldered into place on the 93-95 board.

Notice that the traces are severed in two places.

After carefully scraping the coating off of the traces two jumpers must be soldered in on the 93-95 circuit board. Care must be taken to use enough heat to achieve a good connection between the jumper and the board, but not so much as to damage it.

You will still need to address the tachometer swap if you use a 960 cluster. You may also find that you must deal with clocks that are not the same type in the way they are adjusted (some adjust with a mechanical control through the bezel while others adjust electrically from the panel below the cluster).
