Hi there,

When you compressed the pistons, did they feel free? Are you familiar with that feel? If the flex hose to the axle was acting like a check valve, pushing one piston in would cause the other to push out. This is noticed when you squeeze the second pad, and to better exclude that cause, tested when the axle is supported, not the body.

I've had several cars eat the parking brake shoes. When they delaminate, they just drag, but if left for some time the shoe material breaks up and catches and jams, making you think something really serious just fell apart in the rear end. I think you should pull the rotor and have a look.
