Clutch engaged engine speed related noise 200 1987

my 87 240 just developed a noise at lower speeds (at least thats when I can hear it) 1-40ish mph. It only occurs when the clutch is engaged, but is determined by the rpm of the engine. It may be there at higher speeds just at a pitch that I can't hear or covered up by other noise, i can't really tell. The noise kind of reminds me of the whine that the car makes while being driven in reverse, but it is not the same noise. It was not there when I left for a 900 mile trip, I first heard it on a pee break around 100 miles. It has not seemed to increase in volume or intensity but is still there. Right before I left, I changed the motor mounts, but I doubt it is related. I think I am nearing the end of the life if my clutch, but it isn't slipping yet. Hopefully it is something I can take care of when I change it.

Thanks for the help,
Mark

Clutch engaged engine speed related noise 200 1987

Concerning noises from somewhere near the trans/clutch, a few months ago I began hearing distinct ringing noises in third and fifth gear. I figured loose bearings or a rattling washer. Next the ringing moved to second and forth?? Over the summer it continued, moving to and fro between gears that are on different shafts?? I proceeded with the best Volvo diagnosis being, keep on driving and listening; pull up the boot periodically etc.

Problem solved this week when the noise morphed into more of tinny sound, reminding one of, what else?, the damnable thin metal heat guards tacked onto the front exhaust pipe. Grabed my trusty pneumatic cutter, presto, guards off, transmission good as new!

Lesson learned, again, never jump to conclusion until the Volvo has actually either busted, or you can actually see and hold in your hand the obvious problem.

Another worthless tip, I just glued onto the car the incredibly ugly black plastic trim pieces, trim which has been glued with everything from Titebond II to Gorilla glue. This time I used black silicone gutter sealer! Seems to be permanent! I also used this sticky gooey crap to fill the huge gaping cracks in the dash. Messy, ugly, but so anti-cool that it warms the cockles of my wifes heart. Also, the latest upgrade was sticking on the appelation "SUPER" under "VOLVO" on my trunk, causing the unwary to think I have a heated up model from the factory. It's so much fun living in one's imagination.

My next project, just for fun and winter, is to wire a dedicated ten guage ground from the alternator to the battery!

Could also be the driveshaft center support bearing.
