M41 oil type? 140-160

I have an early type m41 that is currently removed from the car. I have a 1974 140 factory service manual, it says to use SAE 30 Motor oil. Before I reinstalled the trans, I changed the oil using SAE 30 . After I was done changing the oil, I noticed a small leak coming from the speedometer cable output shaft that wasn’t there before I changed the oil.... Any chance the older M41s used thicker oil? ... or do I have a new gasket to replace? Thanks for the help.

There are 2 seals, one is an O ring on the metal plug that the speedo gear runs in, the second is a small top hat seal that sits between the spindle on the speedo drive gear and the square drive on the cable itself. It's a miniature oil seal, part number 380192

Don't think that 30 weight oil is your problem. Have run 30W Non-Detergent oil in mine for over two years now with no problems.

Obvious guess would be that the "O-ring" on the speedo drive is the culprit.

How difficult would it be to replace that o-ring? Thanks for the help.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the speedometer cable is the majority of this job.

Thanks for the info. I looked at my speedometer output shaft on my M41 and couldn't find any easily accessible rubber O-ring. Could this O-ring fall out easily? I’m still puzzled why this thing wasn’t leaking before I changed the oil….. weird. Do you happen to know a part number or a good place to buy this part? Thanks for the help

            Hello,

Do you have a D or J style overdrive?

Assuming you have a left hand drive car, a D style overdrive has the solenoid mounted on the passanger side of the overdrive and is attached with 2 small screws.

A J style overdrive has the solenoid mounted on the drivers side and it is screwed into the overdrive.

Both styles have an oring around the speedometer drive housing.

The D style uses an external seal that goes on before the speedometer cable to seal shaft of the speedometer gear.

While the J style has a seal inside of the speedometer drive housing.

              Thanks Eric,

My solenoid is on the passenger side of the car with (1) wire going to the 4th gear lockout switch. Sounds like I have the D-style overdrive unit. I'm guessing the little rubber seal fell out when I was moving the transmission around my garage. I looked all over but can't find it anywhere.... Sounds like an easy fix once I find a replacement. I'm up in Seattle and have a couple local Volvo shops that might be able to help me. Thanks again

              -Bryan

As Art said, Mike at IRoll can help out, Olaf a Vintage Import Parts can help,(he ships out of Point Roberts,WA., so he is close) VeteranProduktor in South Carolina can help. All the replacement part catalogs appear to be basically the same as far as I can tell. Be careful to make sure that all parts and surfaces are very, very clean before re-assembly, and that you don't strip your speedometer cable fitting during reinstallation. This stripped speedo thing is just a rumor, I've never actually done it to myself and shelled out another $71.26 for the experience....oh, no.
As an aside, you may have been a bit low on lube before you changed it out, and now with the tranny full, it revealed this issue.

It's not exactly an O-ring, more like a tiny hat.
            Don't know the P/N.
Mike at IRoll Motors in Gilroy, CA can fix you up.
